REDDITCH United boss Paul Davis described Saturday’s 3-1 friendly victory over Romulus as a “very good exercise” after some members of his squad completed 90 minutes for the first time during pre-season.

Goals from Giancarlo Gabbiadini, Leam Howards and Jamie Ashmore secured victory against the Midland Football League side.

The Reds are unbeaten during this pre-season campaign so far, but Davis was focusing more on performance and fitness at the final whistle.

He said: “Of course, winning football matches is our ultimate goal, so I am pleased that we showed a positive mentality and gained the victory. Our performance levels were decent; we dominated large parts of the game and scored some very good goals, but we need to move the ball quicker, be more clinical in front of goal and switch on defensively.”

Davis also paid tribute to the Romulus management for assembling a side at short notice for Saturday.

Rugby Town are due to visit the Trico Stadium on Tuesday night (7.45pm kick-off) after stepping in after original opponents North Leigh postponed.

Davis said he expects a stern test against Carl Adams’s side and will be a good indicator as to what shape his squad is in.

He said: “There are a lot of players that will be familiar to the squad, with many playing for Stratford Town last season. I believe this game will act as a fair barometer of where the squad is in terms of preparation for the new season.

“It will also give my staff and I another opportunity to monitor the progress of some trialists, with the squad set to be trimmed in the next week or so, as I finalise my squad ahead of the season-opener in August.”

Adults can get in for £5, concessions for £3 and under-16s with an accompanying adult are free.
