WORCESTERSHIRE have given their backing to the England and Wales Cricket Board's proposed changes to their constitution in relation to the new city-based T20 competition scheduled to get under way in 2020.

The County's board members voted at a meeting in favour of the ECB's proposals that will allow the creation of a new T20 competition to begin in 2020 which will involve eight new city-based teams.

The ECB's current articles state all of their competitions must be open to the 18 first-class counties.

To bring about the proposed change it requires 31 of the 41 members to vote in favour of the motion via a postal ballot.

Worcestershire chairman Stephen Taylor confirmed: “Following a meeting of the club's board we voted in favour of the ECB’s proposal to change their articles.

"The new competition will provide much-needed revenue to all clubs with significant additional investment in recreational cricket — something we at Worcestershire are very keen to develop."

But Taylor added: "The preservation of all formats of cricket at New Road is fundamentally important.

"We will continue to lobby the ECB to ensure proper governance is in place so the 18 counties and MCC have the voting majority to make any future decisions.

"This will go a long way to protecting the four-day game, 50-over competition and T20 Blast.”
