Redditch RFC 12-55 Droitwich RFC

Redditch opened brightly but after securing turnover ball at the tackle the young Droitwich backs spun the ball around to cross for their first try after only two minutes.

From the kick off the visitors attacked again and it was only a magnificent tackle from Will Heath that stopped the certain try. When the isolated Droitwich runner did not release Redditch used the penalty to put some distance between them and their try line.

Will’s tackle seemed to spur Redditch and they defended well before gradually forcing their way up field. Jim Barrow went close to scoring after a sustained attack down the left wing. Bryn Williams went even closer as the referee adjudged he had placed the ball just short of the line. However all the effort came to nothing as an eventual penalty allowed Droitwich to put in an immense kick which took the lineout down into the scoring zone.

The team in Gold and Black made no mistake at the lineout and scored from a perfectly executed driving maul on the 27th minute. 5 minutes later Redditch lost a line on their own throw, and another big drive from the well organised Droitwich pack allowed quick ball for the rapid backs who duly obliged with a try under the posts.

After another 5 minutes the Droitwich No 8 picked up at the base of a wheeling scrum to make a good run before feeding his winger who ran in unopposed which made the score 0-22 after 28 minutes. Redditch held out until half time with no further score.

The second half started as the first with Droitwich crossing on the right for the first score of the half.

Shortly after some indecision and missed tackles by the Redditch defence allowed their opponents to cross under the posts for a converted try. This was repeated moments later to take the score to 0-41 after only 11 minutes of the second half.

Once again Redditch settled down to a period of strong defence, with substitute veteran Garry Mills leading the way. Unfortunately on 30 minutes Garry forced the Droitwich centre inside from a lineout, only to see him step through a ragged Redditch line to score in the corner.

Moments later the Droitwich Captain and prop drove through the Redditch Defence to score adjacent to the posts.

This was the spur Redditch needed and shortly after Bryn Williams backed himself on a trademark mazy run to cross for Redditch’s first score of the afternoon.

Garry Mills then had the last word of the day as he danced his way through the tiring Droitwich defence to cross for a memorable solo try which Will Heath converted.

Next Saturday the seconds will host Alcester seconds in a local derby whilst the firsts are also at home in the league to Keresley.
