DARREN Byfield isn’t getting carried away after Redditch United kicked off the Southern League Premier with a 3-1 win over Chesham United last Saturday.

Goals for former Birmingham City hitman Clinton Morrison, new addition Jazz Luckie and Javia Roberts ensured the new-look Reds made a winning start to the season.

Fans were wondering how new boss Byfield and an almost completely new squad would cope, particularly as they were playing at Stratford Town’s DCS Stadium home as a one-off alternative while the Valley Stadium revamp is finished.

But they got off to a flying start, with the only setback Clayton McDonald’s red card for a firm challenge on Benji Crilley.

McDonald look set to start his three-match ban on Saturday after a change to the rules which speeds up the suspension process.

Byfield said: “It was a very good start by us but I am not getting carried away with it.

“We’re still a new team and gelling and it’s early days but this was a good start.

“I was delighted to see Clinton score, he’s a great character on the pitch who is great a geeing up the people around him.

“He didn’t score in pre-season but created lots of chances and he will score a lot of goals for us.”

Luckie signed for the club at the end of last week after spending pre-season at Hednesford Town.

He spent the second half of last season at Redditch and was an important player as the squad finished runners-up.

Byfield added: “I am really happy to have Jazz at the club, he’s got a great attitude and is very quick.

“I spoke to Liam McDonald last week and it all happened very quickly.

“He came off the bench and took his goal very well, I have seen forwards panic but he took his time and picked his spot.”

United were set to play at Stratford for the second time this week when they took on their derby rivals and the hosts last night.

The Reds then face the long trip to Weymouth next Saturday (3pm kick-off) and next Tuesday they take on Kettering at Bedworth’s Oval Ground (7.45pm ko).
