IAN Longs says his Alvechurch side must not be distracted by a potentially money-spinning FA Cup tie at Hereford and focus on extra preliminary round opponents Haughmond on Saturday (3pm ko).

Like all clubs beginning their adventure in the world's most famous domestic club knockout competition, this is a slightly surreal feel to this clash in Shrewsbury.

It's the first time teams have kicked off their competitive fixtures in the competition, with the Midlands Premier starting a week later on August 13.

Awaiting the winners of this a clash at the Bulls' Edgar Street in the next stage but Long expects a tough challenge at Haughmond.

Alvechurch finished runners-up to Hereford in the last season's title chase and the Midland Premier champions boasted huge crowds at home.

He said: "It's a bit strange to start the season in the FA Cup.

"The competition is an important one for clubs because it can generate a lot of money and excitement and we like to go into the competition with some competitive games under our belt.

"Haughmond are definitely going to be a challenge, they play some good football and we can't look beyond this game."

Church are also hoping to bolster their squad and could sign another forward before Saturday's clash.

Alvechurch ended their pre-season programme with a set of testing games this week.

They won 2-1 at Halesowen Town last week with goals for Jordan Nadat and Simon Williams.

Church drew 1-1 at Sutton Coldfield on Saturday with a trialist on target.

Finally, Long's side completed their summer preparations with a 1-0 loss at Stourbridge.

Long added: "We've planned pre-season to make sure the games get harder as we go on and overall I am very happy with what we've done so far.

"Halesowen, Stourbridge and Sutton were good tough games and they will leave us in good stead for the campaign."
