REDDITCH United will play their first two home games of the season at alternative venues because of a small delay to the Valley Stadium’s £900,000 renovation.

The Reds are hoping to kick off the season against Chesham United on Saturday, August 6 at Stratford Town’s DCS Stadium home.

After the away trip to Stratford on August 9, the Reds tackle Kettering Town and are in the process of moving the clash to Bedworth’s The Oval Ground on Tuesday, August 16.

United have pencilled in their first game on the newly-installed 3G pitch against Kings Langley on Saturday, August 27 (3pm ko).

Redditch are having a major overhaul, with new changing rooms, a thorough update of the main stand and facilities as well as new floodlights, plumbing and electrical wiring installed.

Chairman Chris Swan said: “The monsoon-like weather we had in June meant we lost quite a few days but we have accelerated the process and are getting there now.

“The problem we had is that we didn’t know how bad it would be until we started looking and the wiring and plumbing have cost an extra £15,000.

“But we are confident that the first home game will be Kings Langley on August 27.

“The work on the ground is going to transform the club. We already expect to have 1,650 people using it a week which includes the first team, boys and girls football, leisure leagues and many others – that works out at 90 hours a week. We only have several slots left to book and Redditch United will become a truly seven-day operation.”

Meanwhile, manager Darren Byfield believes United must build on their Worcestershire Senior Cup run as they prepare for the Southern League Premier.

United lost 4-2 on penalties to a youthful Kidderminster Harriers side but had swept aside a strong Worcester City side in the last four.

Saturday’s final was a close affair, with Eli Bako hitting the post and Reece Hewitt volleying a spectacular effort over the bar.

United fielded experienced players such as Clinton Morrison, Duane Courtney and Clayton McDonald and Jordan Jones.

Byfield said: “I thought there were a lot of positives from the game.

“We had to change things around in midfield because Harriers were very good at switching play but I thought we dominated the second half.

“It’s been a very good run and something we can build on.

“We’re not where I want to be yet but the attitude and work ethic of the players has been fantastic.”

Redditch, who played Highgate away on Tuesday night, complete their pre-season fixtures against Bedworth next Saturday (3pm ko).

Byfield said he is also looking to add two new signings to complete his squad.
