Alcester 34, Upton-on-Severn 22

ALCESTER secured their place in the Midlands Division Four West (South) for next season with a second successive win.

The King’s Coughton side showed the will to win and the determination to beat a team, that even in defeat guaranteed their own promotion to Midlands Three.

The visitors, who beat Alcester convincingly earlier this season, scored first and dominated the early stages.

But the hosts replied and edged ahead when prop George Green touched down and Matt Ashby converted.

Alcester stretched their lead to 10-5 through Ashby's penalty, who was later awarded the man of the match Another successful penalty from Ashby made it 13-5 before Upton fought back with a try early on in the second half to make it 13-10.

Captain Jack Green led by example to extend Alcester’s lead with an outstanding try, converted by Ashby who was on fire with the boot.

Upton came back in this topsy-turvy game to make it 20-15, before Alcester replied with a score of their own.

At 27-15 the win looked safe but Upton scored a converted effort to increase the tension.

But Ashby crossed and converted his own try to put the result beyond doubt and pushed Alcester to fifth place in the table ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Elsewhere, the Seconds ended their season with a defeat to old rials Shottery while the Colts beat Woodrush 34-15 and the under-16s edged out Old Leamingtonians 24-21.
