ALCESTER Town hope to continue their excellent form in 2016.

Town are riding a crest of a wave after 4-1 and 7-2 wins over Coventrians and AFC Solihull respectively.

After Saturday’s clash at Badsey was called off because of a waterlogged pitch, Alcester tackle Boldmere Sport and Social Falcons at home in the Challenge Vase this weekend (1.30pm ko).

They ended 2015 in style with a 4-1 win over Coventrians in the Midlands League Division Three.

Manager James Robbins made two changes to the side who were victorious over AFC Solihull last time out with Richard Layton returning in goal at the expense of Ben Goode and Lamar Simms replacing Nick Dance at left midfield.

Town struggled to get a foothold in the game early on, Coventrians arguably looking the stronger of the two sides and adapting to the conditions better, causing the home side one or two problems in midfield areas.

As the half wore on, Town got themselves more and more in to the game and began to create a few more openings.

Their first goal arrived when a superb crossfield ball from captain Mark Briggs found Matt Trinder on the far side of the Coventrians box and he finished superbly past the Coventrians goalkeeper.

Alcester doubled their lead just before the interval when a free-kick was awarded 20 yards from goal and top goalscorer Matt Layton hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Simms then curled a delightful effort into the far corner to make it 3-0.

Matt Layton then struck the post with a spot kick, before Coventrians pulled back an eye-catching goal from 20 yards.

But Town wrapped up the win with a fourth late on when Layton slotted home his second of the game and 21st goal of the season from close range.

Robbins said: “I’m really pleased with the result.

"I don’t think our performance was great, in terms of ball retention, but full credit to the lads for extending our excellent run of form.

“We were perhaps fortunate to come in 2-0 up at half-time but we controlled the game in the second half and to score another four goals is pleasing.”
