ALVECHURCH notched up a 12th win of the season in the Midlands Premier to keep hot on the heels of the league leaders.

Goals for Leigh Downing (2), Connor Deards and Josh March saw Church stretch their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games by seeing off Shepshed Dynamo 4-1.

Church, who play Westfields tonight (7.45pm ko), remain in third but if they were to win their games in hand they would be leap above Hereford and Heanor to go top of the table.

Manager Ian Long had said: "We're on a very good run and what's most pleasing is the fact we're playing some good football and scoring team goals as well.

"It's important to have competition for places.

"If players want to be involved in the big games they know they have to play well and be consistent.

"Obviously, the league is very tight so we can't afford to drop any points and the games between the top sides will be important."

Church continue to fight on numerous fronts after edging out Studley 5-3 on penalties last week in the Worcestershire Senior Urn.

They return to the FA Vase on Saturday, when they tackle West Midlands Premier outfit AFC Bridgnorth.

Dave Bellis is set to be a doubt but March, Connor Deards and Sam Williams are expected to be fit.

Jordan Nadat and Sam Beasley are both cup tied for the clash at Crown Meadow (3pm ko).

Long added: "Bridgnorth have got quit a big slope so that will effect the game but in some ways it may also help us."

Alvechurch have also signed Halesowen Town goalkeeper Matt Sargeant, who will compete with Paul Evans and Mihai Gherasim for a starting spot.

The Lye Meadow side boast the best defence in the league.
