ALVECHURCH cruised into the next round of the FA Vase as they stunned nine-man Wisbech.

The Lye Meadow side faced to lengthy trip to the Fenmen but it was a more than satisfying trek as they booked a spot in the second round against AFC Bridgnorth on November 21.

Alvechurch were in charge but took the game by the scruff of its neck after home midfielder Billy Smith was sent off for two-footed challenge on Sam Williams.

Joshua March punished the dismissal in the 39th minute when he scored from a Connor Deards free-kick.

Deards then scored from the spot after Jack Cresswell was clipped as he drove into the box early in the second half.

Karl Edwards' spectacular volley made it 3-0 and stunned the majority of the 221 strong crowd.

Wisbech were reduced to nine when Steven Reid was sent off for a second bookable offence, before Edwards bagged a second to wrap up a fine victory.

Manager Ian Long said: "I must say I was very pleased with the performance.

"The referee deserves a lot of credit, the home fans were trying to put the pressure on him but he got all the big decisions right.

"We scored after the first sending off and it was double whammy for Wisbech. It's the first time we've had a bit of luck all season."

Defender Richard Huckfield missed the game with a one-match suspension for picking up five yellow cards. The club discovered a clerical error by the FA but informed the governing body of his bookings.

Long said: "Luckily our club secretary Steve Denny keeps a close eye on things and noticed the FA had two different numbers for Richard. We didn't want to take the risk down the line."

Alvechurch tackle Coleshill at home on Saturday (3pm). Last year's runners-up are mid-table but have games in hand on the rest of the Midlands Premier because of an impressive run in the FA Cup.
