ASTWOOD Bank had a weekend to forget as they suffered double defeat in league and cup.

Bank suffered a disappointing three-wicket loss to Whitchurch in the Birmingham League Division Three and then crashed out of the Village National Cup with a seven-wicket defeat against Pelsall.

On Saturday, Astwood experienced their fourth loss in the last six league games after another poor display with the bat.

Adshead won the toss and opted to bat first but they were dismissed for 103 in 36 overs.

Hasnain Vanish Bajaj was the dangerman for the hosts with a six wicket haul.

Astwood's bowlers did their best to salvage a win and took seven wickets but Whitchurch made 104-7 in 31 overs, with Jon Summers (3-20) and Andrzej Jagielski (2-22) taking wickets.

"Being bowled out for 103 is not good enough," said Adshead.

"The conditions played their part and we bowled well but there was too much to do.

"Unfortunately, this has happened too often and losing to Whitchurch was disappointing because I don't think they're a great side."

A day later, Bank saw a chance to make the quarter-finals of the National Village Cup go to waste after going down to Pelsall.

The Staffordshire had improved greatly since Astwood had thrashed them earlier in the season.

The hosts had won the toss and made 195-6 in 40 overs, with Tom Pedley (38) and Andy Alexander (37) among the runs.

But Tom Henderson hit 92 not out as Pelsall made 196-3 in 31 overs.

Adshead said: "I thought 195 was a decent score but unfortunately, we didn't bowl as well as we normally do."

Bank will be aiming to bounce back in the league on Saturday, when they go to bottom of the table Water Orton on Saturday (noon start).
