Medals galore for county swimmers


THERE were a string of personal bests and a huge haul of 32 medals for Redditch's swimmers at Worcestershire County Swimming Association Championships.

The club had 19 youngsters competing over three weekends in Hereford, Wolverhampton and Worcester.

Leading the way for Redditch was club captain Paul Wilkes, who retained his overall county champion status in 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events and also swam superbly to add the 100m freestyle championship.

Thirteen-year-old Danielle Harwood took four age group gold medals in 1500m freestyle, 100 and 200m fly and 100m individual medley. She also added four silver medals and two bronzes in a tremendous overall performance.

Redditch's dominance in the thirteeen-year-old girls' category was completed as Lucy Knibbs took gold in the 200m individual medley to go with five silver and two bronze medals.

In the 15/16 girls age group Jess Nice won the gold medal in the 50m backstroke to go with bronzes in the 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle.

Elizabeth Humphreys (12) scored two bronze medals in the 50m and 100m backstroke together with four other top six finishes.

Rob Stanley (13) took 3rd in the 800m freestyle and top 10 finishes in a further eight events.

Other Redditch swimmers swam superbly but just missed out on medals.

There were 12 Redditch Swimming Club members in the West Midlands Modern Pentathlon Associations qualifying event for the MPAGB National Biathlon Championships and West Midlands Open Triathlon held at the Bluecoat School.

The Youth E (10 years) girls team of Nicola Moss, Caitlin Green and Eve Battle came second overall while the the boys Youth E team, Daniel Bridgman, Braiden Hartles and Adam Watson, went one better.

The Youth D girls (11-12 years) team of Hannah Rolls, Sophie Bridgman and Heather Robbins finished fourth while the Youth B (15-16 years) girls, Suzanne Britt, Emma Green and Courtney Hyde, took their team title.
