ALCESTER A claimed the bragging rights as they saw off their clubmates in the B team in the S&W Birmingham Over-60s League Division Seven.

Leading the way this week were John Slater and David Whittington (both dominant at 21-6), with Renny and Jean Bannister giving excellent support at 21-8 and 21-9 respectively.

The remaining winners were Ken Harvey (21-19) and Margaret D’Elia (21-20), to give the A side a 12-point win.

A home defeat befell Alcester A in Division One of the Yardley Wood League, as they could only muster three winners and slipped to a ten-shot loss.

The Heart of England League saw the first round of the Knock Out Cup, with Alcester A team brushing aside the challenge of Valley to proceed into the next round with a 32-shot win.

Three winning cards came from the home four, with John Alderson continuing his early season form with an excellent 21-6 success, Peter Barber (21-14) and Carole Slater (21-15). The away four also produced three winners, John Slater (21-9), Ken Harvey (21-15) and Renny Bannister (21-18).

The B team struggled valiantly against Black Horse A, a side from three divisions higher than Alcester, as the end result was a 25-shot deficit to consign Alcester to the Consolation Cup.

At home, Margaret D’Elia fought hard before going down 20-21, but Val McDermott was the only home winner with a superb 21-7 success. The away four also produced a single winning card, David Whittington (21-17).

The Over-60s section of the Heart of England League saw Alcester’s A team beating Hockley Heath A in Division One.

In a relatively close fought match, both teams produced three winners, but Alcester had slightly the better of things to win by 11 shots and gain 13 league points. The winning Alcester cards came from John Slater (a superb 21-5), Renny Bannister (21-12) and Carole Slater (21-15).

In Division Five, Alcester B travelled to the difficult Moorpool green to take on their A side and lost by a mere four shots, Alcester produced a most creditable performance.

Again the teams shared the winning cards, Alcester’s three being a brilliant 21-8 win from John Williamson, and good cards from David Hodgson (21-11) and Val McDermott (21-15). A mere 3 league points against the home teams 13, seemed scant reward for the visitors in this extremely close match.
