REDDITCH United boss Liam McDonald believes his players are running on empty following the 1-1 draw with Banbury United.

That was after Reds had bossed the game for long periods but couldn’t convert a string of chances which would have put the game to bed.

The draw concluded a testing weekend for the Valley Stadium outfit, who were trounced 4-0 on Saturday by promotion-chasing Truro.

With three games of the season remaining, Redditch are six points off the play-offs with their chances of booking their place in the end of party.

The manager felt his players were suffering from burnout after a long season, in which United have been pushing hard for the top five.

McDonald admitted: “We should have won the game comfortably, 2-0 or 3-0 at least. I think Banbury only had two shots in the whole 90 minutes.

“I couldn’t fault the players for their attitude, their application and work rate, but it seems as though there’s not enough left now.

“They’ve put so much effort in this season, to the point where we’re running on empty now, but I still believe a play-off place is still possible.

“Against Truro last Saturday, we weren’t very good, but I thought we completely dominated today against Banbury and it’s always disappointing when you don’t go on to win games like these.

“If you look at where we’ve come over the past 18 months, we’ve gone from relegation favourites to being one of the best sides in the league – and that’s what other teams tell us, so we are making progress.”

United go to already relegation bottom side Burnham on Saturday (3pm KO) aiming to end a four-game run without a win.

Liam Spink and Clayton McDonald are expected to shake off injury worries to bolster United’s options.

McDonald said: “We’ve got three games of the season left and I want us to win all of those games.

“It will be interesting to see how Burnham are playing after their relegation.

“This season has been an experience for some of the lads, who have never played so many games.

“Earlier in the season we were attacking teams relentlessly and maybe we’ve paid the price for that, so maybe we need to pace ourselves more.

“But it’s also a good experience for the players and we won’t be making many changes during our last few games.

“The players are also playing for their places at the club next season, Redditch has become a club players are interesting in joining.”

United’s final home game of the season is against Biggleswade on April 18, before they wrap up what has been a fine season with a trip to Arlesey Town.
