REDDITCH United have not given up hope of a controversial move to play at defunct Hereford United's Edgar Street home.

Sources close to the club have confirmed the Reds have been in contact with the ground's owners, Herefordshire Council, about switching from their traditional Valley Stadium.

Edgar Street is currently vacant after the Bulls were wound-up in January and it is thought a host of groups, including phoenix club Hereford FC, applied for tenancy.

While it was revealed at a council scrutiny committee that the FA were opposed to the move, United have not given on a switch.

Redditch have become frustrated in the last few seasons after their hopes for a new ground were blocked by Redditch Borough Council.

United, who are believed to be looking at several relocation sites, are also awaiting a decision by Redditch Council regarding their bid to add an artificial pitch to their Valley Stadium.

Chairman Chris Swan is keen for United to become financially self-sufficient and feels a move to a better equipped stadium would increase the club's ability to generate revenue.

But a move away from their home near the heart of town centre for a 100 mile round trip to Hereford is set to infuriate United fans and leave Redditch without a football club.

The switch Meanwhile, manager Liam McDonald believes Redditch United can help rebuild fallen Football League star Clayton McDonald's career.

The 26-year-old former Manchester City youth team player has been drafted in by the Reds boss after Jim Mutton suffered ankle ligament damage, which is set to keep him out for up to a month.

McDonald is an experienced central defender, having played for Walsall and Port Vale but his career has stalled in recent years.

He was acquitted on rape charges in 2012, the same case in which former Sheffield United forward Ched Evans was found guilty.

The defender, who is based in the North West, had featured for Vanarama Conference outfit Southport on a non-contract basis but left after making 13 appearances in December.

The Liverpool-born centre back made his debut in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Hungerford.

The Reds had been leading 1-0 thanks to George Carline's penalty but were reduced to ten men after Dan Scarr was shown two yellow cards.

United defended well but Charlie Mpi levelled for the hosts during injury time.

McDonald said: "Clayton has a lot to offer Redditch, he's only 26 but has played a lot of games in the Football League.

"He's over 6ft tall and has already made an impact with his talking.

"We want to help him rebuild his career because he's a very good player.

"He's on the same money as the rest of the lads and is prepared to drive three and a half hours to play for us."

He added: "It was a good performance by the lads but I was disappointed we were pegged back.

"Dan let us down and he knows that. The first yellow was for a challenge but the second was on the half way line and completely unnecessary.

"He's already apologised and we'll lose him for a game."

United will be aiming to get back winning ways when they entertain Slough on Saturday (3pm ko).

McDonald wants his players to build on their recent fine displays.

Their hopes of defending the Worcestershire Senior Cup were ended after they were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Worcester City last Tuesday.

"I think Slough is a massive game for us," said McDonald.

"We have played well in the last three games but now we need a win to build the momentum."
