MANAGER Liam McDonald says Redditch United’s new young guns will shine for the club.

The Reds boss has moved quickly to fill the void left by Jermaine Hylton, who made a switch to League One promotion chasers Swindon Town on a two-and-a-half year deal last week, by bringing in a host of talented young guns.

Luke Shearer (Alvechurch), Kyle Turner (Pilkington XXX), Leigh Phillips (Westfields) and Zac Sirrell (Hinckley) have all signed as United continue their policy of developing talent from the lower reaches of non-league.

Shearer caught the eye in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Dunstable, which saw Simeon Maye score and Ben Heard concede an own goal.

With the now defunct Hereford United’s results expunged from the Southern League Premier, Redditch are fourth in the table with 48 points.

He said: “Luke did very well, he’s only skinny but is very strong and once he settles into how we play he will score goals.

“Jermaine has gone now but we’ve been able to bring in some gifted young guys who we can develop.

“Kyle Turner will score lots of goals and we’re tremendously excited about Zac Sirrell, who is a very talented player.

“He only joined on Friday night and is a shy lad, but when he gets in around the lads he will be another good player.”

Redditch's game against Worcester City in the Worcestershire Senior Cup on Tuesday night was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

They resume their league campaign at Poole on Saturday (3pm ko) before going to Truro City (7.45pm ko) on Tuesday.

They are still awaiting an FA judgement after the club lodged a complaint to the governing body, alleging Swindon had made an illegal approach.

United had been in talks with a number of clubs, believed to be Shrewsbury, MK Dons, Fleetwood and Birmingham, about the sale of Hylton in the hope of securing a sell-on fee in any deal before the Robins swooped.

Chairman Chris Swan conceded the experience means the club is set to rethink its policy of not putting certain players on contracts.

“The door is closed on Jermaine, we move on and we wish him luck,” added the manager.

“You live and learn and we’ll have to look at contracts.

“It’s not a cut and dried situation, last season we had Jamie Molyneux on a deal, this season he’s been out with a serious injury for three months.

“If he had been on a contract this year, then we might have had to release some people. It’s a judgment call and clubs at all levels don’t always get it right.

“When we came in our focus was getting the club back on track, but now we’re one of the best teams in the league.”
