LEE Adams admitted his failure to strengthen the squad was one of the major reasons why he decided to quit as Alvechurch manager.

Adams stepped down from the Lye Meadow after watching his side lose 2-1 to Rocester at home in the Midlands Premier.

He only replaced Ross Thorpe at the end of August but has been unable to improve results dramatically, with Church 13th in the table.

He said: "I wasn't enjoying the job and the results had not improved much so I decided to leave now and give the club plenty of time to find a new man.

"It wasn't anything to do with the club or the chairman, who is a brilliant guy, I just felt I couldn't do anymore.

"My biggest problem was bringing in the players I wanted. I put in lots of seven day requests but didn't really get anyone of them and I am not sure why.

"This hasn't been a decision I have taken likely, it's been on my mind for the last ten games or so.

"We've been inconsistent this season and not just one game to game but during matches as well.

"I wish Alvechurch all the best in the future."

Adams' assistant Lee Knight will take the reins until the end of the season and will be helped by coach Tom Davies and Dougie Griffiths.

Chairman Richard Thorndike said: "When Lee came in we had hopes of a top six finish and runs in the FA Cup and Vase but it didn't happen.

"Lee struggled to bring in players in and perhaps didn't always take notice of some of the young lads in the area.

"To be fair, we have lost a lot of players to Redditch United over the 18 months and I have had a word with Liam McDonald.

"We thank Lee for all his efforts and unless something drastic happens, Lee Knight will be in charge for the rest of the season.

"The priority now is stability, we've had three managers in a short space of time so we need just to settle down."

Gareth Evans scored against Rocester, who saw Dan Brown bagged a brace.

The game also ended with players from both teams clashing in the tunnel, after Evans was tackled by Rocester's captain.

Church were set to play Stourport Swifts last night, and their next game in on Saturday at home to Basford (3pm ko).
