REDDITCH United manager Liam McDonald has said he will not stand in Jamie Spencer’s way if the hitman decides to join Kidderminster Harriers.

The Vanarama Conference club have submitted a seven-day bid for the 21-year-old, who has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season, despite being restricted to appearances as an impact substitute.

The former Birmingham and Coventry City youth team player, who also played for Alvechurch, has been kept out of United’s starting line-up by Jermaine Hylton and Ashley Sammons but has proved to be prolific at every level he has played.

McDonald has given Redditch-based Spencer permission to speak with Harriers boss Gary Whild, who has built a reputation of finding players from the lower levels of the non-league pyramid and moulding them into full-time professionals that go on to bigger and better things.

The Aggborough outfit are going through a cashflow crisis and are looking to bolster the squad with players from below the Football Conference.

“The decision is down to Jamie, we certainly won’t be standing in his way,” he said.

“It’s a chance to join a good football club at a higher level and experience full-time football, so it’s a big opportunity.

“Jamie is a local lad and loves the club so it’s not a straight forward decision.

“We’ll have to talk to him and see what he thinks.”

Meanwhile, McDonald has backed United to respond to their first defeat in ten Southern League Premier games on Monday.

United drew 0-0 with Corby last Wednesday and at home to Burnham on Saturday, but suffered their first league defeat since October 7 when Hungerford won 2-0 at The Valley.

He said: “I felt for the players after Burnham because they could not have done much more in terms of scoring.

“Burnham defended well but on another day we would have scored.

“Hungerford was different, we weren’t at our best and it showed.

“Hungerford are big, strong and well-organised.

“They are one of the toughest teams we have played and the better team won on the day.

“But we can’t afford to have a night off, the players may have looked at the league table and thought they could win without playing at their best but they were wrong.

“We had a long talk about what happened and I am sure we will bounce back against Biggleswade on Saturday.”

United travel to Biggleswade on Saturday (3pm kick-off) before entertaining Dorchester at home on Monday (7.45pm ko).

New signing Calvin Dinsley, who played against Burnham, is set to be available for this weekend, while Sammons, who missed Monday because of family commitments, is also back.
