ASTWOOD Bank's hopes of staying away from the Birmingham and District League Division Three's drop zone suffered a set back when they suffered a losing draw against Quatt on Saturday.

Heavy rain on saw the match cut to 36 overs before a second downpour lead it to be chopped down to 20 overs.

Bank lost the toss and they were put into bat but on a soggy wicket only skipper Steve Adshead (51) and Sam Thomas (53no), who for a second week in a row scored a half century, made an impact as they were dismissed for 153.

With Quatt's innings reduced to 20 overs, they only had to reach 100 runs to ensure the winning draw and Astwood's bowlers made life difficult for them.

Thomas Harris (2-33) removed opening batsmen Ian Gregory (3) and Nathan Hakeman (0) cheaply but Adrian Evans scored a match deciding 78 not out as Quatt made 118-4 in 20 overs.

Dan Taylor (2-33) took the other two wickets for Astwood.

Captain Adshead said: "We seem to be having a summer when the sun shines Monday to Friday and but the heavens open on a Saturday.

"It's frustrating and it means winning the toss has a big say on the game. Quatt only had to make 100 runs to getting the winning draw but we frustrated them until the final over."

Astwood, who are just above the bottom four, now face bottom of the table Penn at home on Saturday (noon start).
