DAVE Uren felt the need for speed at Shenstone and District Car Club’s first sprint meeting of the year near Lichfield on Sunday.

The Redditch driver was second fastest in his Force PC single seater race car, just one quarter of a second behind John Bradburn from Sutton Coldfield.

With the Rally of North Wales cancelled because of insufficient entries by Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club, this was a chance for local rivals to show off their skills.

Three local crews were at Curborough on the day among the oversubscribed entry list and those competitors were greeted by a clear blue sky to begin their days action.

Paul Harris from Clent came in his Mitsubishi Evo 6 together with Uren in a Force and Peter Cox from Abberley in his Subaru Impreza.

While Uren’s faster car set the pace, Cox’s set a time of 35.36 seconds, ending with a just over one second lead over Paul Harris (36.55s).

Sprinting is a race against the clock held mostly on race circuits and specialised sprint tracks such as Curborough.

Cars start singly and are timed by electronic equipment accurate to 100th of a second.

Vehicles compete in classes relative to their design, engine capacity and any modifications.

Classes start with standard saloon cars and go through to Formula 1 type racing cars.

This allows you to compete against cars of equal standing, so everyone has a chance of winning their own class.

There is also a special trophy for the overall fastest time of the day.
