Coventry Welsh 10, Woodrush 44

WOODRUSH powered to their seventh straight win in the Midlands Division Four West (South) to keep their title hopes alive.

Conditions were difficult ,with a swirling wind and soft footing, but Woodrush started with intent and Josh Tomlinson converted a penalty.

Mike Loughrey bagged the game’s first try, before a superb driving maul from a line-out 10 metres from the Welsh line saw Anton Taylor scoring in the corner.

Skipper Gary McGrann barrelled over under the posts for another try and Luke Russell sprinted clear for the same result five minutes later as Woodrush went into half-time leading 29-0.

The second half saw Welsh take advantage of both slope and wind but Woodrush immediately struck with a vintage interception from fly-half Steve Smart, who ran 40 metres.

The ball went through 10 pairs of hands for the try of the game as Ed Lerna touched down for the rampant away side.

Welsh refused to give up and hit back with two well-worked scores, but the final word was with the excellent Woodrush pack, which drove a Welsh scrummage over their own line, leaving Titch Thomas to dab down to complete matters for the visitors.
