KINGS Norton are seeing their back-to-basics approach pay dividends as they continued their fine start to 2014 with a 21-6 win over Evesham.

The Hopwood-based side built on their victory over Southam by scoring three tries against basement boys Evesham.

Norton are third from bottom with a six-point lead over Shipston, who have a game in hand, who occupy the second relegation spot.

Head coach Ian Jackson said: “We lost a lot of players in the summer and had to integrate a lot of new players and it has taken a while.

“We’ve gone back to basics in terms of style. We kick the ball forward and put a lot of pressure on the opposition defence.

“It’s not pretty but it is certainly effective.”

Tries for Kris Fenn, Scott Wood and Chris Hands, all of which were converted by Ben Manners, saw Norton bounce back from falling 6-0 behind early on.

Kings now have 16 points and go to mid-table Upton on Saturday (2.15pm, kick off).

Jackson added: “I think to stay up we need between 35 and 40 points.

“We’ve won three games so far this season but if we can make it six or seven wins for the season hopefully we will be safe.”

Norton facea tough test against a side which has scored 50 points in their last two home games.
