Woodrush made to work for win
2:14pm Monday 7th October 2013 in Sport
Birmingham Civil Service 20pts Woodrush 47
THIS was nothing like the walkover it sounds as Woodrush found themselves 12-0 down after as many minutes and did not go into the lead until the stroke of half time.
The home side scored two early tries from short line-outs before scrum-half Dan Pons notched a penalty to make it 12-3.
Civil Service converted their own penelty to restore their lead before Pons broke through 3 tackles to score under the posts, improving his own try to make it 15-10.
On the stroke of half time, a big drive by Woodrush on the Civil Service scrum and the ball was offloaded to winger Ed Lerna to score the first of his hat-trick of tries. Pons converted to make it 15-17 at the turnaround.
At the re-start, Civil Service again caught Woodrush napping at the line-out and scored another try in the corner to put them momentarily back in the lead.
But this was to be Woodrush's half and turnover ball on the home 22 saw the ball released to Lerna to score on the outside.
From the kick-off, Pons made another break and fast passing through the Woodrush backs saw Lerna complete his hat-trick.
Pons added another penalty and then following a quick tap penalty, centre Andrew Poole made a strong break before releasing wing-forward Anton taylor to score under the posts.
Another Pons penalty made it 20-40 and then on the stroke of full time, a good break by Woodrush Captain, centre Andy McGrinn and he fed full-back Kristian Duce to score under the posts. Pons converted.
Next Saturday, Woodrush are at home to Claverdon (3pm) in the Midlands Four West (South).
