Holtham hopes Alvechurch learn from mistakes
2:36pm Tuesday 1st October 2013 in Sport
JOE Wright scored a hat-trick as Alvechurch closed the gap at the top of the Midland Alliance to three points - but boss Dean Holtham was far from ecstatic with his side.
Jamie Spencer also added a couple in a 5-3 win over rock bottom Continental Star.
But having seen his team cruise into 4-0 and 5-1 leads Holtham said they should not have taken their foot off the gas.
“We missed chances in the first half and weren’t that good and then we were great for half an hour after the break and took our chances, but it was the last 15 minutes that concerned me.
“We gave them three goals through bad defending. It was non-committal from our team so not great simply because we gave them three goals, not because of good play, but because of mistakes. Maybe we thought it would be easy?
“I like to think the players will learn from it but its up to individual players how they deal with situations.
“The 5-3 scoreline makes it look close but we were out of sight and it should really have been ten, but it shows what happens if you take your foot off the gas.”
Alvechurch go to Alliance new boys Quorn on Saturday (3pm) and Holtham will be without Dayle Kenny (knee), Craig Gill (ankle) and Daley Cameron (work commitments).
“Not having Daley and Craig means we have no left-sided players at the minute which leaves us a bit unbalanced. But we have a very young side, we had on 17 and four 18-year-olds in the team on Saturday and we will just keep going.
“I don’t know much about Quorn this year, it’s a nice little ground but they are new to the league so we will just prepare properly as we do for any game and hopefully we’ll get the right result.”
