Moving on up despite defeat

Woodrush 19, Southam 24

WOODRUSH moved out of the bottom two in Midlands Three West (South) as they earned a bonus point against fellow strugglers Southam.

The Wythall-based side had out gunned Southam three tries to two but lost the game because the visitors converted all their kicks.

The Warwickshire outfit went ahead with an early penalty but Woodrush took the lead when centre Andrew Poole broke free and released Gerry Connolly to score under the posts. Fly-half Steve Smart added the extras.

Southam kept in touch with another penalty before poor tackling by Woodrush defence allowed them to cross for a 13-7 lead.

Woodrush regained their lead when lock Luke Russell forced his way over. Smart converted.

The lead again changed hands when Southam slotted another penalty.

Smart missed a further two penalty attempts for Woodrush and then, against the run of play a Southam winger ran through virtually unopposed to touch down.

They missed the conversion but added another penalty before Smat ran through in the dying seconds to salvage a vital bonus point for the host.

On Saturday, Woodrush visit league leaders Old Coventrians (3pm ko).
