Depleted Kings go down fighting

Kings Norton 17, Old Coventrians 58

KINGS Norton’s mini-resurgence came to an end as they lost to Midlands Three West (South) title-chasers Old Coventrians.

The Kings side was short of nine first team regulars, while captain Chris Carlin was carrying a back injury.

The game was evenly-balanced until the 24th minute when Coventrians sprang to life and scored two unconverted tries in as many minutes.

Despite valiant defending and regular spirited counter-attacks, the hosts conceded three more tries, two of which were converted, to trail 29-0.

Kings conceded another converted score early in the second half but they stormed back into the match.

Carlin pulled a converted try back.

The captain then slotted a penalty over, while Jack Fairhurst also came close.

But Coventrians hit back with four more tries, one of which was converted.

The hosts kept pushing and Pete Crompton seized his opportunity to score the final try of the game. Carlin added the conversion.

Kings travel to league leaders Old Leamingtonians on Saturday (3pm ko).
