Engineers build up a head of steam

ENGINEERS used their games in hand to good effect over the Christmas period to climb five places into third spot in the Studley Skittles League but remain off the pace set by Maudslay and Alcester Nomads.

Their win against Swingers was fairly comfortable but would have been much closer if Paul Clifton (40) and Larry Hanks and Tony Howell (both 34) had received better support.

Maudslay crushed eight-man Trouble Makers for whom Mandy Stone (36), Tina Cooper (35) and Michelle Walley (34) all had great games.

Alcester Nomads were only slightly less impressive in beating Alley Cats. Margaret and Gordon Povey top-scored with 36 points each, with Alan Cummings (35), Mac Eaton, Wendy Cater, and Eddie Upright all doing well on 34.

Pete Sollis (37), Sam Billyard (36) and Tony O’Connor (34) replied well for Alley Cats.

The best game of the week was Lodge Farmers’ penultimate ball win over Mixtures.

The teams swopped narrow leads throughout with Farmers needing just 60 to get on the last leg and not for the first time this season, captain Glyn Morley was left to make the winning score as he made 37.

The skipper was well-supported by Jason Kirk (38), Chris Prichard (36) and Steve Smith (35).

After three successive very narrow losses, it was Team BG’s turn to win a tight game by three pins against Swan.

Team BG’s best scorers were from Ray Cartwright (40), Mary Withers (36), Rob Baker (35) and 34 pins each from Gail Stringer and Carl Baker.

Third-placed Well Developed dropped two places after losing to Jumbo Jet Set, who despite one very poor leg (only 49 pins) still managed to score their highest team total this season.

Results: Swingers 307 pins, Engineers 327; Team BG 326, Swan 322; Alley Cats 306, Alcester Nomads 318; Trouble Makers 254, Maudslay 273; Team BG 308, Chris and Gerry Show 289; Mixtures 316, Lodge Farmers 319; Jumbo Jet Set 328, Well Developed 307; Engineers (w/o) v Mixtures.
