Woodrush suffer Evesham loss
12:00pm Wednesday 9th January 2013 in Sport
Evesham 32, Woodrush 22
WOODRUSH led their opponents for three quarters of this Midlands Three West (South) match but the fitness levels of the home side were the telling factor as they floundered in the closing stages.
The Wythall-based side’s superior forward power saw them force their way over three times in the first-half with two tries coming from second row Luke Russell and one from nymber eight Matt Playford. Steve Smart added two conversions and a penalty.
Evesham, though, had kept in touch with Woodrush and scored two breakaway scores themselves to give a half-time score of 22-12.
Although Evesham scored again early in the second-half, the score remained at 22-17 until the last quarter.
The Lower Albert Road side were now in the ascendant and piled the pressure on the Woodrush defence which finally cracked and they scored in the corner to make it 22-22.
A draw would perhaps have been a fair result but a penalty shortly afterwards made it 25-22 to Evesham and they then confirmed the result with a chip though in the corner which their winger ran onto and touched down.
This Saturday, Woodrush entertain Redditch in the league (2.15pm ko).
n Alcester were left frustrated as their Midlands Four West (South) clash at Atherstone was called off on Saturday because of uncertainty of their pitch’s availability.
The King’s Coughton men host third-placed Birmingham Civil Service on Saturday (2.15pm ko).
