Compton claims title after thriller

DENNIS Compton held his nerve to win the singles knockout competition staged by Swan Studley League.

Compton saw off Geoff Mayneord in a tense, topsy-turvy final which was decided in sudden death, after both men could not be separated after four legs and had drawn 29-29.

The competition saw 32 of the league’s top players take part.

After the first round, five of the 13 league teams were no longer represented in the competition. Also eliminated at this stage were the two lady qualifiers with Gail Stringer (Team BG) particularly unlucky to find Jason Kirk (Lodge Farmers) in excellent form.

There were comfortable round one wins over Gary Ganderton (Engineers), Keith Fryer (Maudslay) and Graham Howell (Swan), while Andy Clewlow (Engineers), Larry Hanks (Swingers), Mac Eaton (Alcester Nomads) and Dave Maule (Swan) had narrow wins.

In round two, Kirk saw off Paul Clifton (Swingers) but Gary Ganderton, Chris Pritchard (Lodge Farmers), and Mayneord (Maudslay) made smoother progress into the last eight.

The quarter finals’ principal game saw Compton (Engineers) beat Fryer by a single pin. John Hall (C&G Show), Mayneord and Howell also progressed.

Both semi-finals were close games. Mayneord came from behind to topple Hall, while Compton kept cool to beat Graham Howell 37-36 in a tight match.
