TWO gifted teenagers from Redditch Swimming Club helped Worcestershire win promotion to Division One in the National County Team Championships in Sheffield.

Poppy McGourlay ,12, and Oliver Thompson, 13, were part of the 24-strong squad competing in the Olympic-sized pool at Ponds Forge.

Each race consisted of ten of the country’s best swimmers in a particular stroke and pushed the Redditch duo to perform to their maximum.

Gourlay gained third place in the 100m freestyle in a time of one minute 1.12 seconds.

Because of the incredible noise from the packed gallery, Thompson missed the start gun in the 100m backstroke, but he battled back to gain a great fourth place in a time of 1.06.06.

The individual performances were followed up by strong relay swims adding to the successful Worcestershire grand total.

In a tense last few races, particularly against Swim Wales, Worcestershire were successfully promoted to Division One as they finished second.
