Redditch finally win
5:00pm Thursday 1st November 2012 in Sport
Redditch 14, Southam 3
THE Kingfishers breathed a sigh of relief by registering their first league win of the season against fellow strugglers Southam in the Midlands Three West (South).
The result was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests and lifted Redditch out of the relegation zone.
The play was fairly even at the breakdown, but the Redditch defence forced Southam into mistakes and gradually back towards their own try line.
Eventually the pressure told and Jack Duffy tapped a quick penalty and powered his way over the line. Lewis Saddington converted.
The visitors struck a penalty shortly after, but Tom Richards increased the Redditch lead further as the defensive pressure paid off again.
Southam tried desperately to clear their lines and spilt the ball on to Richards who gratefully gathered and cantered over for another converted score.
The second-half was a scrappy affair with the set-piece becoming a bit of a lottery and most of the game being played in the middle of the park.
The visitors rarely broke through the Redditch defensive line, but tackled resolutely as Redditch failed to finish the half chances that they created.
Duffy made two outstanding breaks, but Southam managed to scramble back and snuff out the attacks.
They travel next weekend to Coventry-based Pinley (2.15 pm ko).
