Please return a Christian name

The name St Lukes has been synonymous with ‘Headless Cross’ for as long as anyone can remember and many people have been saddened by the decision to remove the name of the local church and replace it with the ubiquitous ‘The Bridge’.

If it was announced that a ceremony was to take place at St Lukes everyone knew that it would be a Christian ceremony in a Christian church, but with the new name it could quite easily be at a motorway cafe.

Although it can be said, ‘what’s in a name’ it seems sad that two Christian churches cannot join together without ditching the name which indictaes to all outside that it is a Christian Church dedicated to a Christian Saint, St Luke, the physician.

Is it too much to hope that, like the Post Office, the church authorities will have a re-think and return the name by which it has always been known.
