MUCH as I admire the work of Derek Coombes and Redditch Local History Society, I cannot agree with his suggestion that Redditch Borough Council should “dig deep”
to fund the rebuilding the tower of Headless Cross Methodist Church (“Let’s Rebuild Spire” – Letters, 22nd June 2016).
Examination of the planning decision and the accompanying plans indicates that the recent demolition of the tower is in breach on the planning permission granted for the development of the site.
Responsibility for any such breach does not lie with Redditch Borough Council as the local planning authority, so why should public money be spent on remedying that breach? It’s up to Redditch Borough Council to determine what action, if any, should be taken to remedy the breach, but funding the reconstruction of the tower cannot and should not form any part of their deliberations.
