A COUPLE of weeks ago Colin Wheeler wrote to the letters page about his memories and asked about a Redditch Lady who went on to marry a Lord.

Well we can confirm that an Edith Roma Batson married Greville Foley Lambert in Birmingham in 1932. In the 1936 Kelly’s Directory of Worcestershire Greville Foley Lambert was a chartered accountant in Unicorn Hill, Redditch.

When his cousin died in 1938 Greville Foley Lambert became the 9th Baronet. The Lambert Baronetcy of London was a title in the Baronetage of Great Britain and was created on 16th February 1711 for John Lambert, a French born merchant who had settled in England. He was director of the South Sea Company and created Baronet for supplying the treasury with loans. The 7th Baronet served as High Sheriff of Worcestershire in 1901 and assumed in 1905 by Royal license the surname of Grey for himself which the 8th Baronet also assumed. However, Greville Foley Lambert never took on the name of Grey and by the 1940s the Kelly’s Directory shows Greville and his family were living in King’s Norton.

I would also like to thank Colin and all the other Redditch residents who have contributed their memories of old Redditch to the archives of the Redditch Local History Society.

The society is always pleased to receive memories, photographs and memorabilia about Redditch’s history which we use in exhibitions and displays at town events.

We are also busy updating our Redditch Heritage website (redditchheritage.

org.uk) with information collected over the past year and will be launching our new “Virtual Museum”

site later in the year.

Our secretary recently reported on new research published by the Heritage Lottery Fund showing that the UK’s heritage helps make people happier about where they live, and is at the heart of shaping and improving quality of life in the UK. So as Redditch has a wealth of history and attractive heritage sites we must use them for the enjoyment of the community.

So give yourself a tonic, get involved in local history. You can always pop into our drop-in sessions at Redditch Library on the third Friday of the month (10-noon) and talk to us about our work.
