As a County Councillor I receive too many complaints about cars speeding near schools when children are about at the start and end of the school day.
Over a 500 yard approach to a school: A car doing 40mph takes 25.6 seconds to cover that distance.
A car doing 30mph takes 34.2 seconds to cover that distance.
A car doing 20mph takes 51.5 seconds to cover that distance.
So if a driver does 40MPH he/she only saves 25.9 seconds over a car doing 20MPH.
Therefore, if a driver sets out from home just 26 seconds earlier and sticks to 20MPH near the school then that car has lost no time and has safeguarded our precious children.
If all this is true (and it is) then why do we not impose 20MPH speed limits on ALL school approaches and add flashing warning signs, speed bumps and road markings?
These measures, to be active only when children are going into and coming out of their school, would provide each one a safer place to be as well as peace of mind for their accompanying parents.
Do you want to get some action on this and not wait for another child to be hurt? Please email your name, address and contact number to pbridle@worcestershire.gov.uk or text me on 07881 370115. If I get sufficient support we will set up a petition to the appropriate people.
