I WOULD like to draw readers attention to the proposed changes in Redditch Library.

Whilst ensuring the library services are maintained during a period of budget cuts is essential, I am concerned that other facilities at the library will be reduced.

As a member of the Redditch Local History Society I know that there is a shortage of town centre space where exhibitions can be held. The proposals for the library will reduce the exhibition space there to the point where the exhibition we are holding on July 26 will not be practical after these changes have been completed. Whilst we have other venues around the town, we have found that a town centre venue attracts most visitors.

The library currently offers what is possibly the largest exhibition space in the town centre so once again we will be loosing out to the needs of Worcestershire County Council to save money.

I’m sure other groups will also feel this loss of facilities as well and alternatives have been proposed.

Securing and developing the old Abel Morrall factory being one and the development of St Stephen’s Church another, but financing these is a big obstacle and neither would be completed in the short term.

So for a town of 80,000 residents, we need a suitable large town centre venue for community events like history exhibitions and art shows etc. Lets not lose the one we have before we have an alternative.
