Alcester Gardening Club

In June the members enjoyed an evening visit to Adrian James Garden at Offenham. This garden is a plantsman’s oasis surrounded by green Worcestershire farmland. The irises were especially eye-catching. Adrian and his wife were the perfect hosts supplying homemade refreshments and plenty of plant information as well as home grown plants to buy.

On July 10 there was a well-supported coach trip to Hestercombe Gardens in Somerset. This garden is situated with lovely views of the Quantocks and Exmoor in the distance. There are fifty acres of lakes, temples, cascades and tranquil woodland walks as well as formal gardens. The roses were in full bloom and the borders with delphiniums of a shocking blue were at their peak. The weather, which had been very changeable, was kind all day.

The next club meeting is on August 4 when the renowned Bob Brown from Cotswold Flowers will give his latest talk entitled plants grow in dirt. This is a talk designed to stimulate and provoke and challenge some accepted gardening practices.

Alcester Gardening Club always welcomes new members or guests. Membership is still £10 per year. The meetings are mostly on the first Thursday of every month at the Centre in Jubilee Court, St Faiths Road, Alcester. Guests can attend at any meeting for a fee of £2.50.
