STUDLEY DAYTIME WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Members and visitors were warmly welcomed to Studley Daytime’s first meeting of 2016 by our President, Margaret Kerr. Business matters and details of forthcoming events were swiftly dealt with, before we adjourned for our customary (and delicious!) tea and cakes. The January competition for a pretty / unusual Christmas card was very well supported.

The guest speaker this month was Alan Rogers, a retired police officer in the Warwickshire Force, with his talk “A policeman’s lot”. We were thoroughly entertained by Alan’s anecdotes, focussing on his time spent in various branches of the Force and actual events which occurred during his time as a serving officer over some 30+ years. He regaled us with hilarious tales of his days as “a rookie”, being fitted out with a uniform which did not fit him (but being told to “make do”), his training and his first arrest within the police. We were much amused by a particular incident which occurred when Alan was carrying out his duties as a traffic officer: this concerned an aged “Hells Angel” speeding on a powerful motorbike, and the outcome was both interesting and surprising! Alan has also been responsible for creating the driver awareness courses which have been adopted by all UK local authorities as a penalty for those drivers caught breaking the speed limit. Indeed, some of our own members have attended those very courses - and (as he sheepishly admitted), Alan has too! All too soon, time was up but we definitely left wanting more from this most amusing speaker.

The next meeting will be at Studley Village Hall on February 3, commencing at 2pm. Visitors are always most welcome.
