THE May speaker was Steven Felix from Blenheim nursery, who demonstrated making a hanging basket. Steven is that rare beast, a good grower and plantsman combined with an excellent speaker and demonstrator. He believes in doing things the traditional way because that was the way he was taught by Alcester’s own Jimmy Adams. So his baskets are lined with moss and filled with a good quality compost.

He then uses tried and tested plants to give a great result.

This system obviously works for him and the baskets in Alcester High Street are the blooming result. This year he has been given the contract for Stratford in Bloom.

The club is organising a trip to Biddulph Grange on Sunday, June 21 and there are still seats available.

On July 4 there will be a social evening with a plant sale, a quiz and refreshments and all are welcome.

In July the speaker will be Rosemary Verey’s daughter, Davina Wynne-Jones with a talk about how her mother’s influence still lingers on in the gardening world.

Alcester Gardening Club always welcomes new members or guests. The meetings are mostly on the first Thursday of every month at the Centre, Jubilee Court, St Faiths Road, Alcester.

Membership is still only £10 per year and includes refreshments at the meetings.

Guests can attend at any time for a fee of £2.50. Any enquiries can be made to the secretary on 01789 765105.
