JUDITH Sullivan reported on the success of our exhibition at the Kingfisher Centre and informed us that arrangements have been made for next year’s exhibitions.

Judith then announced the result of the voting at the exhibition and presented the trophies and certificates to the winners in each section before introducing Lynda Kettle to give her watercolour demonstration.

Lynda had prepared her materials and her easel with a sheet of stretched Arches watercolour paper and told us that, rather than painting a landscape scene, she would paint a scene that had caught her eye during her travels in Provence.

This comprised of a dilapidated, abandoned car in an overgrown rustic setting. Lynda showed us how she had done a preliminary tonal sketch and transferred an outline drawing onto her paper, incorporating masking fluid where she needed to preserve the white of the paper.

To define the shape of the car, she painted in its shadowed areas with modified neutral tint.

To define its lighter areas, she worked on the dark tones of the surrounding foliage and buildings.

Landscape painters often have problems with their greens and, as she painted, Lynda gave some useful information on how she mixed her subtle range of colours.

After removing the masking fluid, Lynda developed the foreground trees and grasses to complete her pleasing and interesting painting.

The next meeting will be at St Luke’s Memorial Hall, Evesham Road, Headless Cross on Wednesday, December 1 at 7.30pm when we round off the year with a social evening.
