JANE and Fred’s holiday started with a two-day delay at Birmingham Airport due to the snow, but once they arrived in South Africa it was sunshine all the time.

They stayed in Port Owen, visiting various beauty spots where they saw pelicans, flamingos and ostriches. On their visit up Table Mountain, Capetown, panoramic views afforded them sightings of Lions Head Mountain, their next destination.

Amazingly, there was a colony of penguins on Boulder Beach, who had adapted to the hot conditions.

They also had views of Robins Island, Nelson Mandela’s prison for 25 years. A safari trip showed them rhinos, wildebeest, springbok and lion cubs.

A relaxing weekend at a spa resort to celebrate Jane’s birthday included thermal pools, whilst being watched, at a safe distance, by baboons.

Ray Sturdy took us on a pictorial trip through the 60s with reminders of world events including space achievements, the death of JFK, Martin Luther King and the Cuban Crisis.

Everything in this decade moved rapidly, new technologies, cars, fashion; we laughed at the clothes we once thought high fashion.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed and identified pop groups, music, pop and film stars.

It was incredible how much we all remembered. More labour saving devices were produced, most of which we had used. The cars of the period were many and varied, the Mini being the most popular, which more than half present had driven.

The new motorways were almost empty and Beeching was closing railway lines.
