School garden scoops first prize

THE results are in from the school gardens category of the Redditch Best Garden Competition 2008, and Kingfisher School in Matchborough has scooped the coveted first prize.

Judge Chris Harten said this was the first year school gardens had been included as a category in the Redditch Best Garden Competition, and they were pleased with the response.

"We saw some lovely gardens and were very impressed with the standard," said Mr Harten.

"The Kingfisher School garden club has worked incredibly hard to get its garden looking great, and we felt that it justly deserved first prize for effort and enthusiasm in achieving great results in less than two years."

The garden began life in September 2006 as a rough field, and the garden club children have enthusiastically tackled the garden, which now boasts several vegetable and fruit areas, a composting area, two greenhouses, fruit cages, raised beds and a large gazebo where staff and pupils can relax after their hard work in the garden.

Deputy headteacher and garden club guru Ian Taylor explained that he supervises groups of up to six garden club members, who meet every Monday and Wednesday afternoon, to work on the garden, the activities forming part of the school curriculum.

Second prize in the competition was awarded to Birchensale Middle School, third prize to Tenacres First School, and "The Good Start Award" to Oak Hill First School. The complete results for the Redditch gardening competition will be announced at a presentation evening at the town hall on September 4.
