A SCHOOL recently took pupils to the Houses of Parliament in the London to see MPs at work.

Westacre Middle School in Droitwich took their school parliament, 16 children to view both the House of Commons and The House Of Lords in session.

They were also greeted by Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston who made time to answer the children’s questions and share some of his stories about life as an MP. The pupils also took part in a workshop in Law making and democracy where they were asked to come up with issues that they would like to debate and make new laws about.

Deputy headteacher, Catherine Doolin said: “The children raised a variety of subjects that were important to them, including: gender pay equality, the banning of plastic straws, testing of cosmetics on animals and the increase of sport in schools. I was incredibly impressed and proud of the level of discussion and passion the children showed. They were clearly inspired by their surroundings and are eager to continue the debates back at school. The whole day was a fantastic experience for the children.”

The Westacre MPs are voted in at the start of each academic year by the whole school during individual class elections. They meet with teaching staff each week to share their ideas about school life.

Mrs Doolin added: “The MPs play an important role in our school, they have organised lots of charity events along with sharing the views of the children about what is important to them in their learning, we encourage all our children to take an interest in the wider world and to be confident in forming and expressing their own opinions.”
