SIDBURY has become a little greener with the planting of 160 new shrubs, in a bid to enhance the local amenity and improve air quality in one of the busiest areas of Worcester’s city centre.

Worcester resident Robert Yuille, who lives in St. Peter’s Court - a Berkeley Homes block of apartments in Sidbury - approached Worcester City Council to see if something could be done to improve the area in front of the flats.

Staff from the city council removed a sterile mix of tarmac, bare soil and paving slabs to create a soft landscaped area in front of St. Peter’s Court.

They planted 160 shrubs including lavender, Spanish gorse, a flowering type of grass called blue fescue, viburnum and escallonia.

He said:  “This area had become rather unkempt so we were pleased when Worcester City Council decided to enhance the area.

"The trees and shrubbery that have been planted and the new seat and waste bin that have been provided are a decided improvement on this prominent site, on one of the main approaches to the city. Full marks to the city council.”

Cllr Jabba Riaz, Mayor of Worcester, who acted on residents’ requests for improvements, said: “Now that the landscaping work at Sidbury is complete, it provides a dramatic improvement to the appearance of the area.

“I am impressed with the work and dedication of the operational staff, who carried out this work to improve the street scene in Worcester with a great deal of care.  Feedback from the local community has been very positive.”
