THE YMCA, NEW College and HMP Hewell have been working hard to refurbish flats in Redditch, which now totals an impressive 78 separate dwellings, during their five year plan to improve the quality of accommodation available to the YMCA’s current and future tenants.

Karen Lumley, MP for Redditch, had the opportunity of viewing the recent refurbishments on a visit to the YMCA project.

The Knowle Close Refurbishment Project was started in 2013 in partnership with the YMCA, NEW College students and HMP Hewell inmates, offering those involves practical and varied work placements.

By working in partnership, these organisations have been able to provide valuable opportunities for those individuals who took part by giving them real hands-on skills and experience to take forward into the workplace.

Anne Smallman, head of operations for YMCA Worcestershire said: “It is encouraging to see the achievements and skills gained for the people involved in this project. As an organisation we believe strongly in affordable accommodation that is of a high standard for all of our tenants, this project is enabling us to achieve that.”

Mrs Lumley added: "I was impressed by the quality of work that has been carried out during this project and the level of commitment shown by those involved to ensure great results.

"The outcome from everyone’s hard work is fantastic and participants should be proud of the work that has been achieved here. I’m sure that the tenants of these properties will be thrilled."
