ANOTHER set of signs to improve pedestrian safety on a busy Hagley road is not the answer, according to a councillor, who fears a tragedy will soon strike.

Residents and councillors have fronted a campaign for improved safety on the A456 ever since it was redesigned following the approval of the CALA Homes development in 2013.

A temporary mobile speed camera was set up last year, catching 63 drivers over the 30mph speed limit within the first two months.

Worcestershire County Council is now planning to alter the lane alignment on the A456/A491 roundabout and erect a ‘no-U turn’ sign at the A456/B4187 junction.

But Hagley Parish Council chairman cllr Steve Colella believes this is not the answer.

He said: "They just don't get it.

“The Highways authority is missing the point completely.

"The junction is not fit for purpose, making the millions of pounds spent by Cala Homes on the re-engineered junction a complete waste.

“The planning authority was reassured, despite mass objections, that the highway changes at this junction would mitigate the housing development.

“This has proved not to be true and our objections have been proved correct.

"I am calling for a formal investigation into the role that highways had in authorising the changes and an inquiry into how so many objections could have been ignored.

“This can either be done voluntarily before a tragedy happens or as everyone believes wait for a tragedy to happen. This is a disaster waiting to happen and those in position are ignoring the issues.

"I really can't believe that they believe that the installation of another road sign will keep pedestrians wanting to use the pedestrian crossing safe.

“I regularly stand at this junction and cross the road. When vehicles pass through at speed the 'drag' that the vehicle causes is immense.

“Everyone recognises that there is a risk of people being dragged into the carriageway with dire consequences.

"Another set of signs and white lines isn't the answer and physical re-engineering is once again called for with a 'C' change in attitude by the responsible councillors and officers."

Worcestershire County Council said they have monitored the “very busy” junction and will implement their changes in the Spring, “in response to poor driver behaviour”.
