A PARTY in the park, in honour of murdered MP Jo Cox will take place in Dudley this weekend.

Sunday's free event at Grange Park is inspired by the Jo Cox Foundation's 'Great Get Together' will celebrate unity and community cohesion.

Families are encouraged to bring their own picnics to enjoy as they listen to live music from the likes of Jess Silk, Giant and The Georges, Mick Brigdale, Systematic and Over Atlantic.

There will also be poetry readings, games and a minute's silence at 1pm in honour of the late Labour MP, who was killed in Birstall on June 16, 2016.

Since then, groups across the country have held events in her memory, inspired by her “More in Common” philosophy.

Arun Devasia, from HOPE not hate, said: “The Great Get Together event in Grange Park is the people of Dudley recognising that in order to build bridges and heal our divided community, especially after all the political confusion of the last two years, we need to celebrate our diversity.

“Dudley is a borough with so many new and old communities wanting to be part of a shared experience.

"How better to do this than through the universal language of music?

“We are very pleased to see local community leaders, councillors and the local MP lead the minute of silence to mark the anniversary of MP Jo Cox’s murder.

“Karen Paskin, Black Country Radio, Unite communities, the TUC and the Friends of Grange Park have worked tremendously hard to bring all these bands, the local community, as well as local leaders and councillors together to celebrate what we have in common.”

The event will run noon to 6pm.
