A CORONER was unable to reach a definite conclusion about the death of a two-month-old Rowley Regis baby who stopped breathing as he slept.

An inquest at Black Country Coroners Court heard Zahfiah Peart was found unresponsive by his mother Kaydan on the morning of September 6, 2017.

Ms Peart said she gave Zahfiah his last feed at 1am before falling asleep on her bed next to him.

But when she woke up she noticed something was wrong, adding: “I glanced at him and he didn’t look right, so I looked at him again. I then picked him up and ran downstairs to my mum.”

After calling for an ambulance, the baby was rushed from his Hanover Road home to Russells Hall Hospital, but despite resuscitation attempts he was pronounced dead at 7.44am.

Ms Peart, who has two daughters and three other sons, told the court her pregnancy with Zahfiah was ‘normal’.

Consultant pathologist Dr Tamas Marton told the court Zahfiah – who had no genetic conditions, pre-existing medical conditions or injuries – was well cared for and there were no suspicious findings surrounding his death.

Senior Black Country Coroner Zafar Siddique recorded an open conclusion after confirming the baby’s cause of death was unascertained.

He said: “There’s no identifiable, direct cause. Nobody can say how he passed away, but there was nothing to suggest it wasn’t natural causes, but no-one can say categorically.

“There is no-one to blame.”
