It’s the best kept secret in town: Did the Bay Horse Lions team from Hereford beat the unbeatable Eggheads in the popular long running television quiz show when it was recorded in Glasgow last summer?

The city challengers were sworn to secrecy. But all will be revealed on BBC2 at 6pm on Friday.

Win or lose, the programme will be a fitting memorial for the team captain Chris Lewis who set up the team to take on the Eggheads whose members are Britain’s finest quiz masters and rarely get beaten in the show which launched in 2003.

Sadly, Chris, 59 and a coach driver with Yeomans collapsed and died just a few weeks after the quiz was recorded when he was helping passengers board his Hereford to London coach at Cirencester.

A member of Hereford Lions Club, Chris never missed the club’s monthly quiz night at the Bay Horse.

Team member Lynne Price said: “The whole experience was both nerve racking and incredible and if it had not been for Chris we would never have had this unique memory.”

Family and friends plan to be at the Bay Horse to find out the quiz result after failing for nine months to get any of the team to break their vow of silence – and keeping the audience wondering if the Hereford quizers were good enough to steal the champion’s crown.
