The construction of a new petrol station, with a convenience store attached could go ahead despite objections from nearby residents and parish councillors

An application to build the filling station just north of the Kentucky Fried Chicken and the Bluebell Farm pub off the A4440 ring road Nunnery Way will be considered at a planning meeting next Thursday.

Worcester City Council’s planning officers have recommended councillors give the scheme the go ahead.

But some neighbours and councillors from Warndon Parish Council don’t like the idea at all.

The then chairman of the parish council, Ray Morris, wrote objecting to the Budgens supermarket included as part of the scheme on the grounds that it could damage stores in the city centre.

He said: “There is no dispute that in retail terms the proposal is in an out-of-town-location.

National Planning Policy says that when considering edge or out-of-town proposals, preference should be given to accessible sites that are well connected to the town centre.”

Mr Morris pointed out there was no bus route to the site and little cycle provision and that visitors would be highly dependent on cars.

One resident wrote that the restriction of sales of petrol and diesel cars proposed by the government for 2040 would render “this entire application obsolete".

They added: "It brings into question the long-term sustainability of new petrol station builds within the UK.

“The appetite for cleaning up and reusing land contaminated by derelict fuel stations is incredibly low.

“Warndon Villages and Worcester would be left with a piece of unwanted and contaminated land.”

There were letters in support of the plan and the report to councillors say the developers also received more than 2,100 letters in support in response to their consultation.

The petrol station is a change to existing permission to build a car showroom on the site.

The report recommending approval says that, when completed, the petrol station and car wash would probably employ more people than a car showroom, and that it will not have an impact on other shops as the nearest are more than a mile away.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 1.30pm on Thursday at the Guildhall in Worcester.
